My Photography Philosophy

My philosophy toward photography is pretty simple: Shoot what you see…not necessarily what’s there. Along the way, I’ve developed some rules or guidelines.

  1. See what hasn’t been seen before or hasn’t been seen the way you see it.
  2. Embrace the emotion of the moment and let it help capture the image.
  3. Try to eliminate everything that doesn’t add to the message of the image.
  4. Pay attention to how temperature (shadows, color, light) lifts the image.
  5. Surprise. Always surprise.
  6. Don’t be afraid to either exaggerate or minimize the environment if necessary.
  7. Find what everyone else missed.
  8. Shoot a thousand pics. Save one. Consider yourself lucky.
  9. Show up where a good story is likely to unfold.
  10. Photography should lean more toward art than journalism.

There you have it. My 10 rules.
