My philosophy toward photography is pretty simple: Shoot what you see…not necessarily what’s there. Along the way, I’ve developed some rules or guidelines.
- See what hasn’t been seen before or hasn’t been seen the way you see it.
- Embrace the emotion of the moment and let it help capture the image.
- Try to eliminate everything that doesn’t add to the message of the image.
- Pay attention to how temperature (shadows, color, light) lifts the image.
- Surprise. Always surprise.
- Don’t be afraid to either exaggerate or minimize the environment if necessary.
- Find what everyone else missed.
- Shoot a thousand pics. Save one. Consider yourself lucky.
- Show up where a good story is likely to unfold.
- Photography should lean more toward art than journalism.
There you have it. My 10 rules.
